The 30 year (and counting) search: Saab96 V4

A Merry Motoring reader has shared the story of his old Saab96 that he was given for his 21st birthday in the hopes that a fellow reader may have more information about the classic vehicle. Read Tim’s story below.

“I was given a new Saab96 V4 for my 21st birthday in Jan 1971. My first ever new car, it was finished in Saab red with a black interior and was bought from Anderson Motors, Hazel Grove. I kept the car for about 3 years and had Anderson Motors build the car up to light rally spec. This included 28/36 Webber, Recaro rally seats, half roll bar, Britax full safety harness, Hilda tripmaster, beefed up brakes, Nav light, Rev counter, wider steel wheels, 2x Cibie super Oscar spotlights, sump guard, Saab works bonnet strap and Saab competition exhaust system.

Unfortunately the images of the car after it was modified in light rally spec were lost in a house move, but I do have a couple of images of the car outside our home that were taken on the day of delivery.

The car was sold by Anderson Motors (who are no longer in business) on my behalf at the end of 1973. I’ve been looking for my old Saab for the last 30 years. I’ve tried the DVLA numerous times as well as owners and enthusiast clubs and websites where you can enter the reg number. The latest information that I have is that it was put on SORN in 2010.

I run a corporate chauffeur company and have a strange daydream that I’ll be dropping a client off at his home and will spot it tucked into an outhouse, but I think this may be wishful thinking!

If anyone has any ideas that I have not tried or have any information before I give up the quest it would be greatly appreciated.”
