Buying A Campervan: The Best Time And Where To Buy

Fatbikes for their campervan trip

Buying a campervan is a big moment – one that is driven just as much by heart as by head. But did you know that choosing when and where to buy can make a huge difference to the price you pay and the options available?

At Footman James, we specialise in protecting campervans of all shapes and sizes. In this guide, we share the best times of year to buy and the places worth exploring, so you can make a confident decision and get closer to your next adventure.

When is the best time to buy a campervan?

To answer this question, we’ll first look at how the campervan market changes with the seasons.

Buying in autumn and winter

The best time to buy is often between November and February, as demand for the vehicles should drop at the end of summer. This can mean lower prices and more room for negotiation, as private sellers may be keen to sell before winter storage costs kick in, and dealers will likely want to free up space ahead of new stock. However, you may find your choices are limited as, generally, fewer people choose to sell over winter.

Buying in spring

In spring, more campervans come onto the market, but sellers know that buyers are planning trips, and so this can push prices up. However, if you want a wide range of specifications or models to choose from, this can be a good time to buy.

Buying in summer

Summer is usually the most expensive time to buy a campervan. Demand for the vehicles is at its highest and competition can be fierce, particularly for popular models.

How should you buy a campervan?

Every campervan seller has their own pros and cons, and there’s no single perfect place to buy your vehicle. We’ve weighted up some of the most popular options below:

Buying from a dealer

If you’re a first-time buyer, dealers may be the ideal choice for you – they offer consumer protection and warranties, their vehicles are often serviced and checked before sale, and they may even offer different finance options. Dealers can also offer advice on layouts and specifications, so you can be confident in what you’re getting. However, you trade these perks for prices that are usually higher than private sales, and you have less flexibility on negotiation.

Buying privately

Private sales can offer excellent value, as you may find lower prices with room to negotiate, and direct insight from the seller into how the van has been used. But stay cautious, as there is no warranty or aftersales support, and buying the van comes with greater risks if your checks aren’t thorough. If you’re buying privately, always view the campervan in person and check documentation carefully.

Buying at shows and events

Campervan shows bring multiple sellers together in one place, so this can be a great way to compare models side-by-side, speak directly with experts, and access exclusive show-only deals.

Buying online

Online marketplaces such as Auto Trader or eBay Motors offer convenience and lots of choice, but they can be rife with scammers, so stay wary. Never pay your deposit before you’ve viewed the vehicle and be cautious of low prices – if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Always take extra care to verify the seller and vehicle details.

What to check before you buy

There are a few essentials you should remember to check before you finalise your purchase.  Look for any damp and water damage, and check that the electrics and gas systems are working. Make sure you’re aware of the van’s weight limits. Does the van have enough storage, and is its layout right for you? Taking your time before you finalise everything can save a lot of money and headaches later on.

Campervan insurance and protection

Once you’ve found the right campervan, you’ll want to protect it as best you can. Having the right insurance in place helps ensure your adventures stay enjoyable, whatever the road brings.
